There does not seem to be a consensus as to the exact details of the legend of Saint Valentine or St. Valentines Day, however, one version has Saint Valentine, a bishop, performing clandestine marriage ceremonies for soldiers during the time of Claudius II.  Claudius II felt that soldiers that had no ties to family or children would be the best soliders, therefore, marriage was banned (at least for soldiers).  It wasn't long before Saint Valentine had been given a death sentence by Claudius II of the Roman Empire for breaking this decree, fell in love with Asterius's daughter, penned a note before his execution entitled, "From Your Valentine".
